Foods That Promote Healthy Teeth
April 18, 2023 2:39 amThere are many things patients can do to help achieve and maintain optimal oral health, including making simple changes or additions to their diets. For example, we recommend making a greater effort to include the following tooth-strengthening foods in your diet!
- Crunchy Fruits & Veggies
- Nuts
- Dairy
Carrots, celery, apples, pears, strawberries, bell peppers, jicama, cucumber, and raw broccoli are healthful snack options in more ways than one. Fruits and vegetables are packed with the vitamins and nutrients you need to fuel your body. Plus, when you bite into these fibrous foods, your teeth are getting a quick scrub, which helps remove plaque and food debris.
Nuts like almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, and walnuts are high in calcium, protein, and phosphorus, which means they help fortify your teeth against decay and sensitivity. They also help balance the ph levels in your mouth, stimulate saliva production, and scrub your teeth while you chew. Nuts are a filling snack you can easily take with you on-the-go to munch on throughout the day.
Dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt contain tooth-strengthening calcium and casein. Drinking milk and eating cheese can also lower the acidity levels in your mouth. Avoid processed cheeses, which is natural cheese mixed with non-cheese ingredients, like Cheese Whiz, American Cheese singles, Velveeta, and cheese in a can.
Other Ways to Improve Your Smile
You likely already know that sugary treats are not the best for your smile. Enjoy treats like candy, pastries, cookies, cakes, potato chips, and juice in moderation. Rinse your mouth with water after eating dessert. Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, floss every day, and avoid tobacco products.
